– LED (viết tắt của Light Emitting Diode, có nghĩa là điốt phát quang được cấu tạo từ 2 lớp bán dẫn P và N tiếp xúc nhau. Đèn LED là sự kết hợp hoàn hảo của đèn sợi đốt (chất lượng chiếu sáng cao), và đèn compact (hiệu suất phát quang cao). Năm 1993, Shuji Nakamura đã phát minh ra LED siêu sáng trên nền GaN. Phát minh của Nakamura đã làm thay đổi một công nghệ chiếu sáng, tạo ra một ngành công nghiệp có giá trị 10 tỷ USD ( năm 2010)
